Suicidal Feelings

Feeling Suicidal? Get Help Now

If you are feeling suicidal or as though you will hurt yourself and you have come to this page – well done. You have already taken a massive step.

Suicide is something that happens when the amount of pain overcomes your resources for dealing with pain. Luckily, there are lots of resources, even when it seems like there is no way out.

If you think that you are going to do something to hurt yourself now, you MUST get help immediately. Phone 999 or go to A&E. You could also phone any friend or relative who will take you.

If you are feeling very low and want to speak to someone urgently, there are several places you can go. You can phone:

  • Samaritans, 24/7, on 08457 90 90 90

  • Papyrus (If you are 35 or under), on 0800 068 41 41

If you would like to organise a short term stay in a ‘safe house’, you can phone:

  • Maytree Sanctuary for the Suicidal on 0207 263 7070

Counselling for Self-Harm and Suicidal Feelings

You will also need to access ongoing help to talk about your feelings. Counselling is an excellent start to talk about feelings that seem so unbearable that it is difficult to imagine anyone understanding or being able to help.

A counsellor will help you to understand your feelings, and consider what is happening in your life that means you have arrived at this point. Simply being able to tell someone non-judgemental about how you are feeling can be a massive relief. It is OK to talk about feeling suicidal or like hurting yourself; your counsellor will listen calmly and non-judgementally and help you with these feelings.

Counselling can provide a sense that there may be a future, or other options, rather than ending your life or acting to harm yourself. These are very distressing states of mind to be in and a counsellor who is strong enough to hear how bad it feels can provide a source of solace, comfort and support as well as a ‘sounding board’ for other possibilities. The sense that someone cares enough to hear you out but will not overreact or involve lots of other people can be a great comfort.
